Monthly Message for February from State Deputy
Don McBride
“So that the world
may know new hope”
|
Kennewick, WA - February 2012
What a month this has been… I find that January is always
an exhausting but exhilarating month as I get the opportunity to travel around the
state for a series of Regional Meetings that give us an opportunity to enjoy fraternity
while sharing some excellent training opportunities with Grand Knights, Financial
Secretaries, and others. We made it safely to Spokane, Yakima, Vancouver, Everett,
and Bremerton, and thankfully missed the worst of the snow and ice in the process.
As usual, when we state officers meet with our brothers, we learn as much as we
teach. I want to thank you all for your hospitality, fraternity, enthusiasm, and
charity. Father McGivney would be proud of the works we are accomplishing.
In the course of my travels, I did hear a few things that
gave me concern that perhaps some councils are struggling with finding the right
motivation to recruit new members into the Order. More than once I encountered councils
that, because of past or present issues with retention of members, were starting
to be highly selective and trying to make sure they recruit only members that they
were certain would be “good” Knights- and avoiding recruiting men that they felt
might not have the time or passion to stay fully engaged in the work of the Knights.

"Love and Gratitude Gifts to Give"
|
|
During this time of Christmas and gift giving, let us take
a moment to reflect on the meaning of gifts by slightly moving away from the images
of stores crowded with people, prices, etc. Let us think of what a gift simply means.
From my point of view, a gift should consist of two qualities to really be considered
a real gift: One, it must be something given out of free will showing affection,
appreciation or gratitude; Second, when a gift is given, one should only show happiness
and not expect to receive anything in return. Because of these two qualities, I
believe that there are many gifts that are far from the above mentioned because
it is more of an investment or trade or to put it in other words, it is something
materialistic that entails compensation. From the point of view of the person who
receives a gift, some ideas should also be put into consideration: First, one should
recognize with appreciation that a gift is above all else a sign of affection and
gratitude and in that sense worth more than its monetary value and second, using
the gift in a way of honoring the person that gave us the gift.

...from the desk of the State Advocate!
My Brother Knights,
There is now only one Council that I am missing an EIN
numbers for and I will visit them this weekend. Thank you for your help on this
task. Now I can check to make sure that every Council in the State is on Supreme's
Group Exemption List.
Councils that are in jeopardy of loosing their Tax-Exempt
Status are all busy working on getting that straightened out . There are still a
few of you that I haven't heard from since the last time and a few new ones made
the list. If your Council is listed below, FS, please give me a status update at
StateAdvocate@koc-wa.org. These councils
are: 676,763,1699,2103,8136,11252, and 12786.
If your Council is interested in writing a Convention Resolution,
you can check out the Convention Resolutions Planning Guide found in the Grand Knights
Handbook Folder on your GK's Resource Disc, or you can read all about it in the
Grand Knights Handbook, Part II, Section 3 page II-16 through II-19. Also I have
compiled both documents and I will ask Tim Philomeno to place it on the State Web-Site.
Once your resolution is written, it needs to be approved
by your Council and submitted to the State Secretary, George Czerwonka, by midnight
March 15th. The resolution needs to be on Council letterhead with the Council seal
and signed by the GK and FS to be accepted- NO EXCEPTIONS. Then by April 15th, copies
of the Resolutions are distributed to the Councils, the Council reviews them and
the Council advises their delegates on how to vote. The resolution is then voted
on at the State Convention. That's how it works!

PER CAPITA ASSESSMENT DUE
Please quickly respond to your Council’s “PER CAPITA” assessment
mailed the past week by sending your council check to my attention using this address…PO
Box 1627, Veradale, WA 99037-1527.
The $9.00 per member assessment is due upon receipt and
is payable without your council vote.
BISHOP’S CAMPAIGN
Your State Council Officers voted to give a 25% share of
the “PENNIES FOR HEAVEN” grant this past year to Bishop White Seminary. With our
offering of prayers and financial support for the Bishop’s Campaign, we will be
doing our part in keeping Bishop White Seminary a center for evangelization and
priestly formation for the next 100 years. The continued support of our Archbishop
and Bishops in this very serious need is a burden we can all help to resolve with
a Council Pledge.
I invite you to join your State Officers and their families
in becoming part of this effort too by adding your personal support through a tax-deductible
donation. Please make your checks payable to “BISHOP WHITE SEMINARY” and mail them
to my address at….. PO BOX 1627, Veradale, WA 99037-1627.

District Deputy Director
John Wallace
"EXPECT TO WIN"
|
|
I recently received a communication from District Deputy
02 Tommy Rosati, which was sent to all key members of his District concerning membership.
I have added his communication to my letter this month.
At the Summer meeting I suggested that you write out your
goals for the District. Hopefully you did this. If not, there is still time. DD
Rosati has committed to his goals for District 2 and how to achieve these goals.
A District Deputy reminds me of the Chief of an American
Indian tribe. We think of the Chief as a very powerful leader. However, in truth,
he has no control over the life, limbs or liberty of his subjects, nor other power
whatsoever; excepting that of INFLUENCE and PERSUASION. The Braves follow him and
listen when he speaks or advises because of his leadership not his management. He
becomes a Chief because of his virtues in war and his dignity. He leads by the way
he lives, not by power but by INFLUENCE.
