2011-2012 District Deputy Director
John Wallace, IPSD
Rob Roberts

I recently received a communication from District Deputy 02 Tommy Rosati, which was sent to all key members of his District concerning membership. I have added his communication to my letter this month.
At the Summer meeting I suggested that you write out your goals for the District. Hopefully you did this. If not, there is still time. DD Rosati has committed to his goals for District 2 and how to achieve these goals.
A District Deputy reminds me of the Chief of an American Indian tribe. We think of the Chief as a very powerful leader. However, in truth, he has no control over the life, limbs or liberty of his subjects, nor other power whatsoever; excepting that of INFLUENCE and PERSUASION. The Braves follow him and listen when he speaks or advises because of his leadership not his management. He becomes a Chief because of his virtues in war and his dignity. He leads by the way he lives, not by power but by INFLUENCE.
This is how any leader in the Knights can operate. Although on paper he is powerful, that does not get members to want to follow him. One of the many ways to INFLUENCE members is to show them an appropriate goal and then show them how to achieve it. Be with them as they work toward what you have asked. Knights want to be led and it requires the person in charge to lead them. We have to be managers, but without leadership no one will follow.
Brother Rosati’s communication:

Membership – Brothers, we are WAY behind in membership. The membership quota for District 2 for the 2011 – 2012 Fraternal Year is 29 New Members. As of 1/01/12, District 2 is at a – 27. (That is a NEGATIVE 27!!). I am not one to be a numbers guy, but this is crazy even to me. I’m reminded of the words of one of my mentors, IPSD (of NC) David Jones. He said;

“If we are not growing, we are dying.”

My Brothers, this ORDER is far too valuable to me & I know to all of you, to let it die. We HAVE to do a better job of recruiting New Members, not just for the good of Our Order, but for the good of that New Member. The Knights of Columbus has changed my life in so many ways for the better. Let’s afford our fellow Catholic men the same opportunity to better THEIR lives.

What I am asking of you – I am asking for a collective effort from each and every man in District 2 to help with recruitment. Get out there and talk to people; ask men if they are members; ask them to come to an “Informational Knight” which should be set up by your Council’s GK”s & membership Chairmen/Committee). The Knights of Columbus is EASY to sell because it sells itself.

What I will do to help – I will conduct as many Informational Knights as you all are willing to put together. All I need to conduct an effective Informational Knight is:

1)   A TV with DVD player

2)   A bunch of Form 100s

3)   A room full of Catholic Men

4)   A motivated Member who is willing to be trained in putting on Informational Knights in the future.

If you can provide me with these 4 things, I am willing to do as many Informational Knights as you are willing to put together from now ubntil June. Don’t want me to help? No problem! I have attached all my personal notes (mostly written by one of my Mentors, PSD David Onofrio on conducting a Membership Blitz & an Informational Knight. Use them as you see fit. If you can’t open the attachments, let me know and I will convert them to .pdf for you. You guys can do this; you NEED to do this. We owe it to Our Priests and Our Charities who have come to depend on the Knights of Columbus’ support.

Okay, gentlemen, it’s time for action. Who’s with me? Can I get an AMEN?!?!

Any of the attachments mentioned above are available from DD 2 Tommy Rosati.
Now is the time for each District to work toward maximum recruitment of New Members. Each council’s goal is to achieve their membership quota. Most councils only need 6 or less New Members to meet their quota.
Your responsibility is to INFLUENCE and ENCOURAGE the councils and to offer your support.
Help them to get ‘er done.
