What are heroes made of?

I imagine that most people would think of heroes as being those who do daring, exciting deeds such as firemen and military personnel. For some, a hero is a sports figure or a politician – note that there are few politicians so regarded. Those who risked their lives on September 11, 2001 or those who have lost their lives in defense of liberty are included in the list of heroes, and rightfully so.

There is another kind of hero – those who in their own quiet way provide us with inspiration by their daily lives. For me, one of my heroes is my own father who, despite legal blindness in both eyes, worked hard to support the family he so dearly loved.

Father McGivney was such a quiet hero – in his own life, he exemplified qualities of greatness in his daily life by trying to improve the lot of those in his spiritual care. In seeking to alleviate the near certain poverty of his flock in a time when Catholics were mistrusted and persecuted, he displayed an extraordinary degree of love for mankind, even going bond for a relative who otherwise would have had to spend his youth in a poorhouse. Out of that principle, the Knights of Columbus was born. Out of that principle, we shout out that our greatest motivation is Charity in its’ purest form – love of others.

McGivney needs to be not only emulated, but also proclaimed throughout the world as we join with thousands of others in promoting the honors of the altar for this holy priest.
